Lord Botetourt was the first governor-in-chief to come in person to the colonies since the institution of the system of Lieutenant Governors came into effect in 1705.  He was a well liked governor who began to see the crisis of non-importation following the French and Indian War. 

On the William & Mary College campus in the Wren Yard sits the statue of Norborne Berkeley, Baron de Botetourt. A member of the William and Mary Board of Visitors and early benefactor of the College, Lord Botetourt was one of the most beloved of Virginia's Colonial governors. Lord Botetourt died suddenly while still in office in 1770, and is buried in the Wren Building Chapel. This statue, dedicated in 1993, serves as a symbol of the College's proud past and the focal point of the ancient campus.
